Red vs Blue, I Love You
Projection Mapping as a storytelling methodology
"Red vs Blue, I Love You" (RvB) was our first foray into using projection mapping technology to tell stories. We applied our filmmaking expertise as storytellers to this new form of multimedia art. Most projection mapping we have seen, while exciting and impressive technically, have been more of an ambient video or music video nature to it. As filmmakers we wanted to use this technology differently, to tell stories. So RvB became an investigation of how to accomplish that, how to apply the vocabulary of film to projection mapping. For example, in film we use close-ups to highlight action or emotion, how do we do that in projection mapping, which is essentially, all one big wide shot? Integrating projection mapping technology and story within this platform has become the next step in our growth as filmmakers and storytellers. Logline
Their love was frustrated by the wall that divided, so the lovers conspired to be reunited. And late one night a plan was hatched, for a red can love a blue, it’s a perfect match. Info Co-created by: Michelle Prevost and Ilena ferrer Starring: Andrew Joseph Perez and Kristian Ruggieri with Byron Lambie as Narrator Running time: 7 minutes Genre: animation/live action Format: Projection mapped installation Synopsis Our main characters, Zed and Boo, live in a happy, whimsical world inhabited by red and blue folks. Everyone is friendly and shares many good jokes. Until one day they notice their town is just too brown. So the wise Leader gives the command to paint the town. The red people start painting with red so bright, this must be the color, it’s so obviously right. The blue folks choose their favorite hue, wonderful, beautiful blue. When they meet in the middle of Main street, an argument arises as to which color is best. To Zed and Boo’s horror, the Leader commands the town be split in two! Because Zed is red and Boo is blue, they are separated by the new brick wall, built tall and thick to keep the townsfolk from fighting any more. Devastated by their separation, the lovers devise a plan to switch paint and make everything match. When the townsfolk awaken to their new, fantastic purple town, they quickly demolish the wall and rejoice. Once again they all live together in this super-spectacular town. They celebrate with a town-wide dance. Premiere Performance: “Red vs Blue, I Love You” made it's debut at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco as part of the 23rd Scary Cow Screening on July 6, 2014. We showed a "Making Of" video followed by the projection mapped presentation. All attending cast and crew were invited up front for a brief Q &A and photo opp. We got an incredible number of audience members coming up to us afterwards and expressing their delight at the amusing and uniquely performed tale. Kudos to our amazing cast and crew! We were then invited to perform on September 18, 2014 at the inaugural Proteus Works showcase at Firehouse 8, in SF. |
Audience response has been amazing!
