The Internet of Food
Synopsis
"The Internet of Food", offers an in-depth exploration of the research being done by Matthew Lange and Tarini Naravane, scientists at UC Davis, who are building the ontology for the internet of food. Because we must eat to survive, and climate and other forces are affecting how food is grown and processed, Lange and Naravane work against the clock to define and classify all facets of food production, farm to table. Their challenge is to create a universal language to describe ingredients, taste, cooking, varieties, and processing techniques; spanning geographic and cultural boundaries, and across diverse industries.
The documentary project originated with Ilena Ferrer and Shelly Prevost's participation in the San Francisco Green Film Festival's Reel Science Challenge, which paired filmmakers with scientists and challenged them to produce a 2 minute documentary in 2 weeks. Our submission, "Sheeto-typing Dough", along with other Reel Science Challenge films, screened at the Koret Auditorium in San Francisco as part of the 2018 Green Film Festival. “The Internet of Food” continues our look at the scientists’ work.
